MLA 9th Edition Style Guide: Publisher Abbreviations

This guide will assist you in formatting in-text citations and a Works Cited list in the current MLA style.

How to abbreviate publisher names

If both University and Press appear they should be abbreviated as U and P

Example

This appears in the source: Columbia University Press

This is how to include it in your works cited list: Columbia UP

If University does not appear in the publisher's name, then spell out the word Press

This is how to include it in your works cited list: Columbia Press

If Publishing, Publisher or Pictures appears in the source, include it the Works Cited list

Omit the following in the Works Cited list, if they appear in the source:

  • Company or Co.
  • Corporation or Corp.
  • Incorporated or Inc.
  • Limited or Ltd.

If the ampersand (&) appears in the source, change it to (and) in the Works Cited list
