MLA 9th Edition Style Guide: Seasons

This guide will assist you in formatting in-text citations and a Works Cited list in the current MLA style.

The month or season in your source should be formatted as follows:

Example 1

In the source: January 2021

In your Works cited list: Jan. 2021

Months that are more than four (4) letters are abbreviated. Therefore, May, June and July are spelled out.

For more on abbreviations, consult Appendix I of the MLA Handbook.

Example 2

In the source: Spr 2020

In your Works Cited list: spring 2020

All seasons should be spelled out in lowercase.
