APA Style (7th Edition) Guide: Tables and Figures

This guide will help you cite your documents in using the APA 7th ed. publication manula.

Tables/Figures

The table or figure (chart, graph, photograph, drawing, plot, infographic, or other illustration) should be clear and accessible to the reader.  It helps you present a lot of information in an efficient way. The Student Paper Setup Guide has a section on tables setup. Click to view sample tables

Table Components

  • Number - Table # or Figure #
  • Title – brief, descriptive and italicized
  • Headings – column headings, capitalize first letter, center the heading
  • Body – all the headings and cells of the table, left-align the first column, all other columns are centered
  • Note(s) in this order (general, specific, probability) – definitions of abbreviations, copyright attribution, explanations of asterisks used to indicate p values

Figure components

  • Number - Table # or Figure #
  • Title – brief, descriptive and italicized
  • Image – chart, graph, photograph, drawing, plot, infographic, or other illustration
  • Legend – positioned within the borders of the figure and explains any symbols used in the figure
  • Note in this order (general, specific, probability) – (definitions of abbreviations, copyright attribution, explanations of asterisks used to indicate p values)
