APA Style (7th Edition) Guide: Articles

This guide will help you cite your documents in using the APA 7th ed. publication manula.

Articles

Always include the DOI, the volume (in italic) and issue number (in parentheses) in your reference entry. If volume or issue number is missing, omit them from your reference entry.

If there is no DOI, end the reference with the page numbers.

If there is no DOI, but it has an URL (not from a database) include it after the pages at the end of the reference entry.

Don't include database information, unless the article is of limited distribution or proprietary content.

Example (with DOI, volume and issue numbers). Note that the example can also be from a database:

Grady, J. S., Her, M., Moreno, G., Perez, C., & Yelinek, J. (2019). Emotions in storybooks: A comparison

of storybooks that represent ethnic and racial groups in the United States. Psychology of Popular Media Culture, 8(3), 207–217. https://doi.org/10.1037/ppm0000185

Only include an abstract in your reference list if that is the only format available for your source.

The accession, publication, or unique identifier number should be placed after the article title.

After the accession number, place in square brackets the phrase Abstract from and the name of the abstracts database.

Example:

Hare, L. R., & O'Neill, K. (2000). Effectiveness and efficiency in small academic peer groups: A case

study (Accession No. 200010185) [Abstract from Sociological Abstracts]. Small Group Research, 31(1), 24–53. https://doi.org/10.1177/104649640003100102
