Help using and depositing in the institutional repository

Introduction

This section presents important information about: (1) the available collections where your academic and creative work can be deposited; (2) department or program abbreviations for filenaming your work; (3) available licenses and descriptions to select for your work and (4) recommendations about crediting and acknowledging the usage of third-party works protected under the author’s rights.

Collections

The repository accepts academic and creative works from the UPRM’s academic community. Depending on the type of document you are depositing, the table below will help you choose the appropriate collection.

Conference Proceedings & Events Includes the final documents of academic activities carried out at UPRM.

Programs of congress acts, conferences, or symposiums that were carried out at UPRM.

Faculty/Research Works

Includes documents produced by faculty’s academic and creative labor.

Articles, books, book chapters,  conference presentations, presentations, and posters.
Student Works Includes documents produced by the students’  academic and creative labor.  The deposit is accepted  through a professor's recommendation.

Posters, conference presentations, capstone, undergraduate thesis, and classwork. 

Theses & Dissertations

Includes required documents to complete and confer a degree at UPRM.

Theses, dissertations, and project reports.

UPRM Community & Partners Includes documents produced by research centers, special projects, and collaborations. Project reports

Licenses and instructions for the use of content.

At the repository we promote the adequate use of our community’s products. For this reason, we have adopted well-known and internationally used licenses. These licenses are instructions that allow the user to comprehend how they can use their product. Before depositing your product, be aware of what the provided alternatives implicate. 

  • Public domain– Choose this option if the work is NO LONGER copyrighted or has authorship rights (Ex. Material that was published before 1923) (“No Known Copyright”)
  • CC0– Choose this alternative if, as an author, you yield all rights to the work.  This includes the right to copy, distribute, exhibit, and present the work,  or create other works derived from the original, for whatever purpose without having to ask for permission. (“No Rights Reserved”).
  • Creative Commons– Select this alternative in order to grant a license for the use of the work. In this case, your work can be copied, distributed and transmitted by others as long as they follow the following instructions. (“ Some Rights Reserved”). 
    • Allow commercial useSelect  “Yes”, if the person DOES NOT need to ask for your permission. Select “No”, if the person has to ask you permission BEFORE they utilize it for commercial purposes. 
    • Allow modificationsThe permission to copy, distribute, and transmit a modified version derived from your work. Select “Yes”, if the person can create a modified or derived version of your work. Select “ShareAlike” if they must share under the same license. Select “No” if they are NOT allowed to create derived or edited versions of the work. 
  • No Creative Commons– Select this option if you desire to keep all rights to your work (“All Rights Reserved”).

Content Created by Others

If you use content created by others:

  • Remember to cite the original source and to credit the author. 
  • Images are also subject to the copyright laws. Cite them in the style of the writing format you are utilizing (Ex. APA, MLA, etc.). 
  • To include images that are copyright free, visit the LibGuide Licencia de uso de gráficos y audiovisuales where you will find many examples. 
  • If you include graphs, figures, images or tables obtained from other publications, please revise the rules of use from that publishing house.
